Artesia (Anna) Addison has completed one semester at the best school in Domhan, Fearghus Academy. Now her magic class is harder, and the missions are more demanding. With her friendships growing stronger and her heart opening up, she feels that she can finally call this world her own.
Eilam Deforest is an important member of Artesia’s team, and his life is quickly unfolding. An encounter with a demon haunts him long after the mission ends, his criminal parents escape from prison, then an underclassman goes missing soon after.
When frightening circumstances make it so that Eilam vanishes from their lives, Artesia’s group must figure out how to work with a familiar but less friendly face: Evelyn Smith. This happens as the search-and-rescue for their ex-dead classmate kicks into gear. Everyone must fight with all that they have, together and on their own. Losing means much worse than a bad grade.

After a summer of processing some personal revelations, the sixteen-year-old "fire user," Artesia Addison, returns to Fearghus Academy where she sees all her friends she hasn't seen over the summer. She wasn't the only one who took time to explore herself - Eilam Deforest has a new set of friends and his secrets seem to be stacking.
The new school year introduces a fresh set of challenges, including the opportunity to compete in a global magic tournament that takes place in another city, where the top eight schools from around the world send select students to fight for the glory of first place.
Artesia and her school-assigned group make it into the tournament. While in this new city, Guiscard, Artesia meets a girl from another academy and the two hit it off. But feelings of guilt brought on by Artesia's Earthly upbringing make this new social territory confusing. Even frightening. As she's trying to work through her conflicting emotions, she has to fight increasingly dangerous battles.
No matter how busy she and her friends get with the tournament, the city's criminal underworld takes no breaks. The criminal mastermind Alptraum Engel has disruptive plans for the tournament, for Fearghus Academy, and for Artesia.

Fearghus Academy sends Artesia's group on missions in the neighboring continent of Trí, where dreadful human-faced monsters have been attacking villagers along with a unique "separatist" society that the academy students are ordered to investigate.
Diplomacy and danger await the teens as their understanding of this world and the way humans came to be shifts. While their beliefs are being challenged, a new, threatening enemy is hot on their trail and longing for a fight.
