The Writing Process

The "writing process" is everything related to the act of writing - whether that be for a short story or novel.  This involves the stages of writing: Inspiration, Contemplation, Basic Plotting, Character Deepening, Outlining, Drafting, Author Editing, Betas + Revision + Editing, Professional Editing, Final Read, to Publication.

My process looks different than Stephen King's, which would have looked different when up against Victor Hugo's writing process.  There is arguably no BEST process, as people work differently and need to do their own thing when it comes to their own writing.  Therefore, with this in mind, I am in no way telling you HOW to write: I'm simply showing what I do as an author.

Inspiration

I draw story inspiration from various places.  I like to look at my environment and see what I can see, feel the tree bark under my palms, step into the cold of a shallow river, listen to the birds nesting on a mountainside, and watch the bubbling, boiling water (at Yellowstone National Park - a very inspirational getaway if you can manage).  I get inspired by my own doodles, as well as art that I see online or at museums.  I also remember my dreams very well, so I'll often pull elements from or story lines from dreams and insert them into my works of fiction.

For me, music does less to inspire, and more to aid in the element of creation. Though music might inspire a particular scene, and help aid in the pacing of that scene.
